What's New

August 2010

The two landmark Bruce Road radio towers which have stood just off Bruce Road came down Friday, August 27th. Originally erected in the 1940s to broadcast KHSL radio, the towers were later used to send the KHSL-TV signal as well. Since the 1990s only the east tower has been in service as a transmission point for Verizon Wireless, which has recently moved its remaining equipment to another location in southeast Chico. The towers were dropped in preparation for road and infrastructure improvements for Meriam Park.

The architecture firm of Tate Snyder Kimsey was selected to design the new North Butte County Courthouse. The project was ranked as an "immediate need" in the judicial branch's capital-outlay plan and is among the judicial branch's highest-priority infrastructure projects. Final architectural design will be completed once site acquisition is approved by the State Public Works Board.

October 2009

The State Public Works Board (SPWB) approved the selection of a site in Meriam Park for the new courthouse for the Superior Court of Butte County. The site, approximately 4 acres in Meriam Center, was the preferred site for the proposed new building. It will house five courtrooms and will consolidate operations from two inadequate facilities – the current Chico Courthouse and the Paradise Courthouse. This SPWB approval cleared the way for the Administrative Office of the Courts to negotiate a final acquisition agreement with New Urban Builders. The courthouse site includes space for the building, of approximately 60,000 square feet, secured parking for judges, and 210 parking spaces for court visitors and staff. It is scheduled for completion in the winter of 2014.
